Recordare LLC, an Internet music software and publishing company, has released version 1.1 of its popular MusicXML file format. MusicXML files allow the music notation used in printed sheet music to be shared between users of different software programs. It is available for use by anyone under a royalty-free license.

Version 1.1 adds 70 new features to version 1.0, mostly in the area of music formatting. Files saved in the MusicXML 1.1 format can now include full information about how notes, symbols, measures, staves, systems, credits, and pages appear in a printed score.

"While MusicXML 1.0 provided the world's most accurate music transfer between notation programs, our customers wanted more," said Michael Good, CEO of Recordare LLC. "They also wanted high-fidelity music formatting, but without sacrificing the ease of use that has made the format so popular. This is what MusicXML 1.1 delivers."

One of the companies looking to exploit the power of MusicXML 1.1 is MediaRain, a leader in advanced interactive, creative, and marketing solutions based in Orem, Utah. "MediaRain has been collaborating with Recordare in the development of MusicXML 1.1," said Curtis Morley, CEO of MediaRain. "We are excited about the possibilities the latest version brings to those in the music industry, as it facilitates an entirely new class of online music applications."

Version 3.0 of Recordare's Dolet for Finale plug-in for Windows and Macintosh, now in beta test, supports the new MusicXML 1.1 format. It is scheduled for release this summer.

MusicXML 1.0 works with over 40 different programs running on Windows, Macintosh, and Linux systems. These include the leading music notation editors (Finale and Sibelius), leading music scanning programs (SharpEye Music Reader and PhotoScore Professional), electronic music stands for organ and piano, sequencers, algorithmic composition programs, and tablature editors. This combined support makes MusicXML far and away the most widely adopted music notation format since MIDI.
