are you selling your music as MP3s online? If so, what service are you using? RouteNote, TuneCore, something else?

I wish that I had some mp3s worthy of selling.
I will stay tuned to find out the answers that you receive.

Hey Steve,

Yeah, I'm interested to know what other people are using. I'll be releasing some music soon, but I haven't decided which service to use yet. Unfortunately, places like iTunes don't take direct submissions, so you have to use a service to get your MP3's out there.

I use CD-Baby, which is the distribution agent for dozens of online re-sellers including iTunes. All sales get back to CD baby, which in turn gets sent to you via PayPal.

Hi Adriann,

How much is CD Baby costing you to use?

I think it's up to $50 or so now, but that's a flat fee--you don't pay any more. My first two albums are on CDB, and the last payout made me break even. I actually make more on streams at .9 cents a pop than sales. But I'm horrible at self-promotion.

I'm having my new one made by Kunaki, and it will be available through some Canadian friends of mine on their website. I'll post a link when the page is up.

Scott I would like to see this thread expand into your actual "how to" steps. I've been selling CDs and always get asked if mp3s-downloads are available. Now that we are settled in to the new house(and winter is coming !), I am getting interested in taking that step, myself. Thanks for starting things up! Michael

Hi Ed... cool. Thanks for the info! Yes, definitely feel free to post the link.

Hi Michael... there's not really much to it other than converting your tracks to MP3 and then uploading the MP3 files to whatever service you decide to use. There are a number of services out there that will get your MP3 files up on to the retailer sites (iTunes, Amazon, etc.). Some of these are RouteNote, TuneCore, CD Baby, etc. Right now I'm just trying to decide which one to use.

Bandcamp and Soundcloud are two others I looked into. You can get free accounts and they take a small cut of sales.

Hey Ed,

Yeah, but I think SoundCloud is just for sharing, they don't let you sell tracks, do they?

And BandCamp only sells on their site, they don't distribute to the other retail sites like iTunes and Amazon, etc., right?

My first two albums are on CDBaby, and I get digital distro through them. Like I said before, I get more streams than sales.
