Hi Jack,

You can try using the Cyclone synth or Session Drummer 2 synth. You would need to insert one of the synths into a project and then load you samples into each of the pads (in Cyclone) or drum instruments in Session Drummer.

You'll need to make sure you're triggering the correct MIDI notes. That info can be found in the Cyclone interface or Session Drummer help.

it might be better to use native battery 3 as a sonar 6 plugin' to achieve what i'm trying to accomplish?
so other stuff has come to mind----i have a presonus firewire mobile
with a breakout cable MIDI I/O.i hooked up the roland spd11 drum controller midi out to the presonus breakout cable in.so how do i get sonar 6 to recognize the spd11?

Yep, NI Battery would be a good choice.

SONAR won't recognize the SPD11 specifically. As long as it see your PreSonus interface, it should record any incoming MIDI data from the SPD11 into a MIDI track.
