I have just installed Kontakt 3 and played around with disks to accomodate the 32 gig library. For me this is a jump from basic sound fonts and the sample cards I have in my Roland Fantom XR.

The quality of the sounds in the library is amazing straight out of the box, I haven't even begun to tweak them yet. I already had Sibelius G7 Kontakt Edition and, although it is not mentioned directly on the NI web site, I was able to cross grade to Kontakt 3, saving quite a lot. I e-mailed the nice people in Berlin and they were very helpful.

The one downside I have discovered so far is the complete mess you can make when everything crashes through lack of power, I ordered a RAM upgrade from 1Gb to 4Gb yesterday. By comlpete mess I mean completely screwing Sonar 7PE and needing to uninstall and reinstall.

Despite this the sounds are very good and it has been well worth the aggravation. I have been blown away by many of the layered pad sounds. It seems a little strange to be talking about great synth sounds from a sampler but why not?

Hi Richard,

Sorry to hear about the mess that happened with your PC. Did you get it fixed up?

Yeah, it takes a lot of power to run the current generation of sampling software. I haven't seen Kontakt 3 yet, but it's on the way. I'm looking forward to checking out the new version. From the promo info, it look pretty powerful.

These days I think most sampling software also provides synth functionality so it's not strange to talk about synth sounds in a sampler.

With the 33 GB library, it looks like Kontakt might be a match for Colossus. I'll have to see how the sounds compare. Plus, of course, Kontakt provides much more sample manipulating power. Although, I wonder if I'll be able to load the Colossus programs into Kontakt? Hmmm... that would be cool.

You'd think since Colossus uses the player it would read the sets without a hitch. Same format? Colossus has how many gigs + the 33 that comes with K3.

Love to make that music,as well I love to tweak,Make my own sample sets

Hey Larry,

Yeah, I would think so too... we'll see. I don't have K3 in my hot little hands yet.

Oh and Colossus has 32GB of samples.

I'm salivating at comparing the samples myself. I just got Kontakt 3 as part of Komplete 5 upgrade from 4. It arrived sometime last week, but I'm too busy to install it with the holidays burning up all my time. I also just got the Kore 2 upgrade from 1, and I'm looking forward to checking that out too. You get one free Kore Sounds per Kore 2, so that will be a nice extra. I'm sold on Kore as a host. I just wish they realized that this is a pro concept and the controller should have more knobs, buttons, and sliders, and they should customize the unit to their applications. Outside of that though, being able to bring together all the elements of sound design and save it all as a Kore preset, absolutely incredible.

Hi Scott

Yes, I got the PC sorted out I'm used to fiddling with them and the extra memory should help a lot when it arrives.

I was really pushing Kontakt 3 with 3 layered pads all working together and then swapping the sample sets in and out while experimenting so I kind of knew it was risky.

Regards

Richard
