I have CW Pro 8.1. I recently heard some tracks done using Sonar and the Edirol VSC which sounded really great. What exactly is this and how - or would - it work with Pro 8 CW?? Or, is there something similar already in the PRO 8 version, or an upgrade I can get??

No CW pro 8 doesn't support DXi or VSTi instruments. That's pretty old software you're using there. It's come a long way. Might be time for an upgrade.
Here is a site that can get you up to speed on the current recording software. Tons of good info here: http://www.tweakheadz.com/software_plugins.htm

And if you think the edirol VSC is hot you will be completely blown away by Other more sophisticated software synths ;)+) And the list is large. Very large.

I got the Edirol VSC with Sonar HS4, but see the Producer version has TTS-1 and Cyclone, which are better. How are they better, though? Why might it be worth upgrading to Producer so I can those other two soft synths?

I think the TTS-1 is the same as the Edirol Hyoer Canvas. It has better quality samples than VSC but not as good in my opinion as something like Sonic Synth or SampleTank or Dimension the new offering from Cakewalk. But there are other reasons to upgrade like advanced features and better effects. But I wouldn't do it just for TTS-1.

If you like the VSC, you will be totally ecstatic over many other products out there. I think you'll particularly like Native Instruments Kontakt2, especially if you get the tutorial DVD. There are lots of nice free soft synths over at the KVR-VST website that you'll want to download. I'd start with Crystal, Synth1, and Phibes. Also, the Phibes author has many other synths posted that are available free. They look cool, sound cool, and they are not buggy. Toss a free effect like Izotope Vinyl or Ohmforce frohmage in the effects bin and you'll really be having fun!

okay - it looks like there's a lot of good stuff out there. Now my question is - would any of these things mentioned (KVR plug ins, etc like Crystal, etc) work with my Cakewalk Pro 8, or am I out of luck until I upgrade??

Gmutt all you need is a host. There is a major free host available at this time. It's called Reaper and it allows insertion of DXi and Vsti instruments and effects plus recording of audio. All you need to do is download this less than a meg app and you can then start using Freeware synths/effects right now.

This link will take you to the forum and from there you can get info or download this puppy. You will not regret this. But I must warn you. Once you start playing you will want more;)+)
