After 3.5 years of great service (well, actually 3; there were some rocky periods in the beginning), my Carillon 1.7G needs a refresh. Since I love the soundproof case, I’m replacing most of the guts with new stuff. Here’s what I’m thinking:
- Intel D940 3.2G (dual core, hyperthread) on an Asus P5WD2 MB with the Intel 975x chipset, 1066 fsb
- 2G DDR 667 memory
- Seagate Barracuda 300G 7200 rpm SATA (this is in addition to the existing 40 and 80G drives I run; XP is on the 40, the active project is on the 80 and long term storage is on the 300)
- ATI All-in-Wonder 2006 Radeon 256M PCI-E
Either at the same time or shortly after I’ll upgrade my display situation by either adding another one to my existing 17” Viewsonic, or buying a new larger display. I looked at the Dell 24” which CNET loves and I think I can get for under $1k.
I'll also upgrade from S3P to S5P, which is part of the motivation to do the processor upgrade.
This machine is already wireless 802.11G. I'm not sure if this mb has wireless builtin or not, but I will be wireless. It was easier than running the cable to the studio.
That looks like it's going to be a cool system. I have done any research on the new boards, so I can't tell you if every will definitely work or not.
Keep us informed on how it goes though...
