Zoran,
I don't think it gets any better than the ART Pro VLA for $299. You may be able to find one used on ebay but they're so popular they typically hold their value straight up. New = $299 and used = $299.

Dewalt makes one of the best compressors on the market today. They are a bit more expensive but will stand up to the wear and tear of everyday use...

I've got the RNC really nice compressor. Goofy name, but a great sounding machine. Also, Behringer typically offers exceptional value for the money, although I have not used their compressors.

I wouldn't recomend a behringer compressor as they will do the job, but are just not very musical.

I guess our original poster hasn't posted any followups here yet, but I'm wondering now what he meant by 'cheap.' A lot of you have shared some ideas for some fairly nice pieces of equipment. I'm thinking back to the first compressor I bought for my studio--just some no-name kind of thing that I picked up on Ebay for less than a hundred dollars. I'm thinking that may very well be 'cheap'-er than anything else that's been suggested in this thread. In addition to the price being right, there's no better way I know of to learn what a compressor does than having to dial in your own attack, release and ratio.
Den
PS: Depending on the application, how about a Boss CS3 Compressor Sustainer Pedal? You buy one of those new right now new for $89! : )

Den, that's a great pedal (Boss CS3) for a lot of things...including vocals (sometimes). I agree with you.
Like the Arion analog delay pedal you can get for like $25 - Just a killer pedal with a great truly analog color and sound.
Cheap never necessarily means that it sucks.
A Behringer T1952 is a great little 2 channel compressor for some applications if you have the right tubes in it. You can grab one of those on ebay for around $80.

Personus makes a few boxes. Not bad in price. Parametric eq and compressor. I use the ol trusty Blue Tube mic pre. Not the best I know but if ya gain stage carefully it gets the JOB done. Both the eq and compressor are under $100.
