Help!

I finally have an amazing computer with all the menory & speed I need to start recording and I need to get a good Auio/Midi interface that works with Windows XP.
I had purchased the Lexicon Omega but the software is designed for Mac and even though I was hesitant to follow their instructions to install it anyway, I did and wound up having to do a system restore because my computer started to bug out after I installed it.
I don't understand how they can market that damn thing as Windows compatible and then it doesn't have any Windows drivers.

I called the store I got it from and they said they'll give me a refund so now I just need some advice on what to get.

I want to be able to record at least four channels at a time. I'd like it to be a firewire interface or USB. I like using Cakewalk home studio so it would be nice if it's compatible with that.
And also I don't want to spend more than $450.00 including tax & tip! : ) LOWER IF POSSIBLE.

I'm a musician - looking to do my own recording so I don't need all the amazing bells & whistles. Just some nice quiet XLR & 1/4 inch connectors and a midi connection.

Anyone have any ideas? I would totally appreciate any help you could give me after my bad experience with the Omega.

P.S. Scott if you're out there and you read this e-mail, I just wanted to say I bought your Cakewalk Power book about five years ago and I think it's great. I learned so much about recording and my computer. Thanks for making it seem simple.

Pat

I did the same thing, I got a digi 002 and pro tools screwed up my computer( When I finally got through all the copy protection crap).
Like you said a mac program tryin to run on a pc.
I sent it back and am still happy with my motu 828 mk2- It's firewire ,plenty of ins and outs, digital and analog, midi in and out, rock solid drivers and the 2 mic inputs on the front can accept1/4 inch guitar cables for tracking guitars and basses. Going price about $745.00 I'm so glad I spent the extra money.

Thanks for the reply.
I'll take a look and see if Motu has something a bit cheaper - that's kind of out of my price range right now.

For rock solid operation and good latency I'd go Maudio. You can get 4 track recording with midi in/out for a not so big price if you chose to go PCI instead if firewire. Firewire is good don't get me wrong, But why pay the price if your just doing a desktop system? Firewire is your only option on a portable laptop system. And if you intend to go mobile forget this, but if your funds are limited a PCI card will do the trick for a much small price.

You might also want to checkout the Presonus Firebox external firewire 400 sound card/mic preamp/midi interface which has sp/dif too. It's $399 usd at most online retailers and GC stores.
