Does anyone use sonar as their surround sound application? I'm currently looking to get everything I need in order to be able to mix in surround and was wondering what other sonar users use as part of their set up.
To do surround you need a soundcard with at least 6 outputs to feed 5 speakers and a sub.I don't do surround in sonar since you can't export without a third party encoder that you have to buy. I use vegas 6 +dvd.
What is your intended delivery of the surround? I'm a video editor and the surround can be encoded to wmv or mov for web delivery on a multichannel master. Another method is to export the mix to separate mono tracks and then import into any application that encodes AC-3 or DTS.
I work for a game developer and we are intending to deliver all of our FMV movies in surround sound. So basically, I'll be given an avi - and I'll have to add sound and music, then mix it all in surround. The final output I hand over would be an encoded file (or files) for the video artist to comp.
We're thinking of buying the M-Audio delta 10/10 soundcard, and a set of genelec speakers for monitoring. I use sonar everyday, and would like to be able to do all the surround mixing with it, but I've been hearing a lot about vegas, although it seems to me that its rather video heavy as opposed to sound. I also use samplitude, which has good surround sound support. Basically, we're experimenting, and trying to find as much info from learned folks like yourselves to help in our decisions about gear.
Are there any reputable AC3 encoders that do work with sonar?
Well, it may not be something every musician requires to be able to do, but I dont just do music, I also do sound design. So all the sound (and music, but not exclusively) needs to be encoded to surround.
We made a few decisions this afternoon.
We're going to go for the genelec speakers 7.1 - A MOTO 828 mkII - but we're still looking for an AC3 encoder : /

It's possible to use Sonar and do surround but. Vegas while video heavy can do surround without any add ons. In fact a cakewalk rep told me that just the codec's included in Vegas are worth the price of the app. If all you want to do is surroud to video SoundForge might just fit the bill but because your doing Video I'd still take a look at Vegas. It's just plain hard to do with out. You can sequence/arrange with Sonar using the Video and then process in Vegas. Once you start pricing the stand alone encoders, Vegas is a bargain. And a very effective one at that. The video editing in Vegas is supremo the video effects mind blowing.
Thanks for the link, however, for some reason I can't seem to access it - I'm forbidden! :o
I just received your book today on sonar 4 and I enjoyed reading through the surround section. Sterling work. No doubt I'll be dipping in and out frequently to kill headaches and gremlins I encounter in sonar :)
I was sure I read somewhere that cakewalk had actually bought over minnitonka? could be just a rumour, but if not, my fingers and toes are x'd that cakewalk will start speaking to dolby about making a standard proprietary ac3 encoder for sonar, much like the A.Pack from astarte for mac users
Hi and again, thanks for your reply. I have been badgered into downloading the demo version of vegas :) Everyone keeps talking about it so I caved. I would really like to just use sonar, but the trouble involved in finding a decent encoder that plugs into it is just a nightmare >.<
Hmm.. that's strange. The link works fine for me. Well, your best bet would probably be something from http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com/
