What are your needs? For what purposes do you need to make and print scores (engraving) and what are your music recording purposes?
There are many programs serving engraving and/or recording at many different levels of sophistication and many levels of cost.
Tell us a little about yourself and your projects.

Bill,
My needs are very basic. I have written songs for a musical comedy. I have someone who writes the piano accompaniment to them (a very accomplished fellow. He's written almost 50 musicals, all of which have been performed, but not at that Broadway level yet.)
So all I need is three staves, one melody for the singer and two for the pianist for the occasional time when someone sings one of my tunes.

Thanks for the info, Scott.
The guy writing my songs' accompaniments mentioned Finale, also. I think I'll go with it.

I've evaluated all of this, and despite much hype about Sibelius, I keep concluding that Finale is the way to go. Most of the top educational programs use it too. There is a cross-grade available that cuts the price for Finale or Sibelius.
For me, the clincher for Finale for my needs is that it can read Encore files. Sibelius can't. Notation is a bit too new for me. It's a very cool design with how the playback is married to the notation, but it's got less features as I recall. I think EM or Keyboard in their November 2006 issue covered notation programs as a specific focus.
Here's the Finale cross-grade info:

Thanks for the info. My computer has been down so I'm late with this reply.
I'm convinced Finale is the way to go except that it doesn't work with Score writer files of which I have a lot. So I've sent for the latest version of Score Writer.
Thanks again. I appreciate it.
