Hello!

I am hung up on installing my Sonar X1d PE expanded and some extra Pro Channel stuff and v synths. I am new to Windows 7 and laptops, too. I bought an ASUS i7 2670QM 16gigs ram 1gb nVidia card and 2 X500gb 7200 rpm drives, the second of which is partioned into D and E equally. I also bought an external 1 TB drive for backups. It is still in the box! I've been running Sonar 5.2PE on a P4 with XP sp3 for 7 years+. I/O has been a Tascam US-1641. Though I'm well into a new CD of my wife and my music, I am willing to let go and learn whatever I have to, to catch up with all the advances over the past 6+ years.

1. Is there any advantage to putting my audio on D and my library-content on E? Even if that is one physical drive? They are the same size and maybe I should make the audio "D" 200 gb and the content-library one 300gb, while I am just starting this whole process up. There is nothing in them yet. I haven't loaded anything onto the laptop either, other than ASUS and Windows 7 updates.

2. Is there an order to installing 32bit or 64 bit versions of Sonar X1PE? I don't know if I will "transition" easily or not, so if I can load them both then maybe my half-way done CD will be easier to finish and learn - make the switch from Sonar 5.2PE on P4 with XP sp3 to Windows 7 and this new ASUS.

3. I installed X1 64 bit last night but cannot update to X1d even as admininstrator. Perhaps I did not install it as administrator.....anyway to tell if I did?

4. I read your advice on what order on your site. I am curious about where the d update goes, and the expanded. Do I have to do the X1c and then d ?

I did try to install 64 bit versions of the updates, though I couldn't swear I ran the X1 as administrator. Start over and be sure .....?

Thanks Michael

Hi Michael,

Welcome to DigiFreq!

1. There's no advantage to partitions (other than organizing your files), but since you only have two drives, I would recommend yes that you put projects/audio on D and soft synth libraries on E. The Content Library is actually project files and audio loops, etc and that can go on D along with your projects.

2. I'm not sure if it matters which one you install first since they both go in different places on your drive, but I usually install 32-bit first and then 64-bit.

3. I don't know why you can't X1d, but yes, I would recommend that you install as Administrator. You'll avoid problems that way.

4. Yes, first you install SONAR X1 Producer itself. Then you install X1c. Then you install SONAR X1 Producer Expanded. Then you install X1d. But keep in mind that there are two versions of X1d and you need the one for Expanded.

5. If you're not sure that you did the install correctly or as Administrator, then yes, I would remove everything and redo it as I mentioned above to be safe.

Thanks Scott
1. X1d Expanded loaded fine 2.I can use my external 1Tb Seagate for my project backup and will partition that unit, so I can put the sample library and content on that drive which can be used with my new desktop when I build it or with this laptop when I travel.. any comments on this "plan"?
2. Since 64 bit is done, I will install the 32 bit and let you know how that goes. If I get BitBridge or the other one I see mentioned I would imagine that most of what I already own and am used to will work. If not, I think I will aim for learning the newer plugs and programs. It's the old 'which now is the best one for NOW! HA!"

Thanks for the welcome! I am glad to be here! Michael

1. I've never done that, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. You just need to be sure that drive is connected and up and running before you start SONAR.

2. Yeah, BitBridge is included with SONAR and functions automatically. If some 3rd party plugs give you trouble, they may work better with jBridge. Some very old plugs won't work at all though and that's just a sacrifice we have to make when moving to 64-bit. Although, there are plenty of 64-bit alternatives out there now so sticking with many of the older plugs is no longer necessary.
