Amazon has these at an incredible discount - in the low $600's - as a starting price. Due to various discounts I've had accumulating, I was able to buy this thing for $384. So - for that price - it seemed like it would be a fun toy to add to the collection. Ok ok - I'm just an out of control hoarder at this point.
Yeah, at that price it's a nice purchase. Even at the regular price it look like a nice piece of gear. It would definitely be fun to just pack that up and bring it to a friends studio for collaboration projects, etc.
That was my thinking - it's just so nice and portable. With it not having an HD in it - it's better to haul around safely. I've got their smaller SD recorder - the 8 track model - and it's nice, but I wanted more features. Not counting those little guys - I have 2 of them - I now have 3 stand-alone recorders - not counting my old cassette model - a Tascam 464 - which really was wonderful at the time. The Tascam's are limited to 48/24 - but the Yamaha does 96/24. Compared to the Yamaha, the Tascam's are just toys. The Yamaha has ADAT, digital 2-channel I/O, all sorts of good stuff - automation, etc. It's a real pro machine. I can't believe they stopped making them. The Yamaha is big and bulky though. the DP-24 should be idea for a features/portability balance. I wish they would put a mouse/video out jack on these things - that would make them really ideal.
