I guess all the major companies are out with their new synths for now. Roland - the Jupiter 80. I wanted to like this, but for the money - I just couldn't go for it. I guess it is their answer to the Nord Stage 2? I really would like a Roland Gaia - and I'd buy it in a second if I had any room for it.
Just got through checking all the news. There's nothing that made be sit up. I was hoping that Roland would have got their act back together and come up with a successor to the Fantom G. I've had a Fantom X6 for years and love it, but I confess to skipping the G as it showed signs that Roland were stumbling somewhat. The Korg Kronos leapfrogged Roland in 2011 so I thought they might have had a response.
I would have thought it would be Logic to return to Windows. I remember how they had been recommended as the best DAWs - and particularly good for being dual platform - and also they support Pro Tool's plug-ins if I recall this all correctly. They got Editor's Choice award - and people ran out and bought Logic for Windows and then Logic screwed them all by dropping Windows. DP - seems a bit late - with PC's on the decline - but maybe MAC desktops are declining faster due to the Ipad.
I was at the show on Sunday. It's right in my backyard but I rarely get a badge to get in. Last time I was there was 2006. The thing is huge. The usual vendors were there. The one thing I noticed were all the new small companies, mostly Chinese and Korean selling pretty good-looking copies. Also there were a lot of vendors selling all kinds of "junky" accessories.
There were some independent guitar builders there as well. One guy... forget his name, made hand-made "works of art". One of his acoustic guitars had a price tag of $35,000! I wonder how it played.
I attended a seminar at the Presonus booth. They were demonstrating their Studio One 2 software. I haven't even tried to figure out Studio One 1 and it's already obsolete!!
PRS had a great display as well as Ibanez. The drum room was nuts! Gretsch had a kit that rivaled Terry Bozio's set up and they chromed every piece for display. Unreal!
I talked to Leland Sklar.... he was there in '06. I met Paul Gilbert, and Guthrie Govan. Two guys (Eric Barnett and Uriah Duffy from a band called "Points North) I met at a concert the night before the show were doing demo's for T.C. Electronics. They took the time to talk to me. They tour a lot. If you ever get a chance to see these guys, you owe it to yourself to check 'em out. They're a cross between Steve Morse and Eric Johnson.
