Did you try out the Class 5 before you bought the MG?

I just bought it sight-unseen ear-unheard. I liked the design of the thing - with the programmable footswitch which I bought too - the various channels and external fx loop. The Class 5 - another nice little tube amp.

DS - do you know anything about this particular amp - the one I bought? The reviews on it are perfectly awful. It has the reputation as been one of the worst of the worst sounding amps - a disgrace to the Marshall label. My thought is that, for $249, it's an amp I can take out and I don't have to care what happens to it. I'm not totally hostile to solid state amps, and I think you can tweak the thing to get it to do what you want. I've got so many pedals to use with it too. Anyhow, it's big and heavy - and I'm not sure I will keep it. It's about 15 lbs. heavier than I thought it would be, and about 8 inches higher than I thought too. I didn't look over the size and weight specs - dumb me. Now the Class 5 - that would be a nice little amp. If they blew those out cheap - I'd buy a couple of them.

I had a lead guitarist in the 90's that played what I thought was an MG50 (no fx) and it wasn't horrible. He put a nice little boss chorus box in front of it and it did the trick. Can't say it was a rocker though. Honestly, I think most people that give marshall transistor amps a bad review because marshall is usually associated with tube driven, muddy, ballsy tone. And that just isn't going to happen with their transistor series so why even compare? I think people should review them based on what they are; a simple transistor amp you can drag out to practice or parties.
These days, however, for cheap transistor amps and hybrids I don't know why more people don't buy the Kustom's. IMO they've got a great little sound that's pretty solid. Vox amps are always pretty cool too...and affordable. |

I just bought a Fender Super Champ XD - a little tube/hybrid thing - 15 watts. I think it's discontinued. I got mine on a special deal for $119.00 - brand new. That's really about as close to giving the thing away as it's going to get.

I'd love to hear what that little champ xd sounds like. I'm so used to playing without fx lately that I've forgotten how fun that can be and would like to hear what fender's done inside the box. The only pedal I've used lately is my new EHX Ravish thingy and it just opens up this whole new world. But of course has nothing to do with just simply playing guitar with normal shizz like chorus and delay and flange, etc.
Let us know if you love it or not. |

I've got an absolutely ridiculous amount of effects pedals, as well as rack units and emulations - as well as guitar effects software - and then I can also run the guitar thru synths with inputs as well. So if I want to modify the sound, I have some choices. I should have saved up and bought more unusual effects - rather than the same types over and over - as I've done in part. Anyhow, I hope to be playing around with all these new toys a lot this year. I really do want to collect some of these wild things - like your new "sitar" pedal. That is the kind of new landscapes I need.

When the smoke cleared - it turns out - I paid just some pennies under $200 for the Marshall amp. So if it is lousy - how bad can it be for $200? It sure does look nice in the middle of my kitchen right!!! At least I took it out of the box. Haven't plugged it in yet - but I really do want to hear what it sounds like. I guess I'll enjoy natural kitchen acoustics.

The Fender Super Champ XD - so good sounding, I bought a 2nd one. Got the 1st for $119 on an incredible blowout, but had to pay $249 plus 15 shipping on the 2nd one.

DS - Fender just announced a new model of the Super Champ - X2 - and you can buy it as an amp head with USB computer connection - and have a nice 12" speaker cabinet. A lot of people wished for a 12" speaker - they got it! They are still making an X2 combo model with the same 10" speaker. I actually like the 10"'er myself. I wanted a small compact combo amp with a nice set of features. I don't regret buying the older XD model. I don't care about the computer connection or the effects editing. I want to use these with my pedal collection.
