| You've got to buy something really cool so you have a reason to post another video of you opening the thing and playing with your new toy for all of us to enjoy. |

| It was when Scott got his Cakewalk SONAR V-Studio 700 Music Production System. I still want one of those, but can't justify it at the current price. |

Scott, what do you think of the V Studio 700 now - after having it all this time? Is it worth owning even for the high price?

Nope, the beard is gone. It really started to annoy me after a while. I don't enjoy having to shave on a regular basis, but I think I'm better off without it... for now.
I look like this now... http://www.garrigus.com/proaudiotutor/about.asp
Hey what a transformation Scott! I had the same problem & decided to get rid myself..lol
You sure that's not a stunt double in the pic?
I decided to take some regular Private enginnering classes & finally get my head around alot of the stuff i was struggling on & there was alot believe me but it was a good move & everything mix wise has improved..
Also had to treat my control room for reflections Rockwool everywhere nearly killed me Arghh... |

Hey Otto,
For me, it was worth it. I didn't have anything comparable to it in terms of features and quality, so it was a nice step up in tech for the studio. And of course, we're talking about two different pieces of gear here... the control surface and the interface. I had the Frontier Designs AlphaTrack before the VS700C because I didn't think I really needed a larger control surface in the home studio, but man, it's very nice having access to multiple controls and faders. And of course, I have a bunch of different audio interfaces, but the VS700R is better than the others that I was using. Lots of features and connections, and the preamps are very nice.
It's expensive, but it's definitely top-of-the-line hardware, so you get what you pay for. As long as Cakewalk continues to support the hardware in future versions of SONAR, this system is still the best SONAR setup out there.

Hey Sean,
Ha! Yeah, I look quite a bit different without the beard and the long hair.
Congrats on the classes! Definitely a good move. Audio engineering is both an art and a science. Knowing the theory behind it certainly helps with mixing. When I studied this stuff in college, it was a bit of a pain in the ass because I also had to take regular courses at the same time, but I'm still glad that I went. Whether you go to college, take private classes, or learn from books/tutorials, I think it's definitely important to have that background knowledge if you want to improve your engineering skills.

| Have you put anything in the ASX slot yet? I bought the electric piano ASX for $89 on a blowout a while ago. I don't have any Roland gear that can take the thing yet - it was a strategic purchase. I had hoped they would drop the price on the V Studio 700 package - seeing that they still ship the thing with 8.5 - that makes no sense to me at all. Maybe you qualify for a free upgrade if you buy that version now - I don't know how that works. I wish it also was upgraded to be a Fantom G. |

| I was just going to buy a Roland Fantom G6 today for around $2023.00 shipped, but then I succumbed and instead bought a Korg Kronos 61 for $2639.00 shipped. I still want the Fantom G6, but it will have to wait. I might end up waiting for whatever Roland comes out with next. What a massive upgrade this Kronos is from my Korg Wavestation EX. I wish they would build in mouse and LCD display output - that would make it just perfect. The Fantom has the mouse at least. The Kronos is about as close to my getting to a dream synth. I'm blown away by the specs. |

You might like this little toy that's on price drop:

If you want a drum machine softsynth by Fxpansion - Geist.
Well, I ended up buying the Fantom G6 just now as well - $2023 shipped. Really - an incredible deal. I got it in a package with a stand and bench - whoopie!!! Junk really, and then also an Oxogen 25 USB controller. They tossed that in with the Korg Kronos 61 as well as a pair of junky headphones.
So now I have 2 of these Oxogen 25's to add to all the other keyboards I own. The Korg Wavestation EX - I guess that is going to go. I bought it in 1993. Being a hoarder now, I feel attached to the damn thing and don't want to let it go.
I've got the only 2 ARX boards that exist for it currently - and I might have bought Brass, but I'll have to look around for it. Brass has inexplicably been discontinued - bizarre. Roland never followed thru with the promise of the ARX Series. I get so mad at how these companies promise stuff and then often never deliver.
So, of course, in 2012, Roland will probably come out with some killer new keyboard that is so must have, I'll regret I bought the 2 year old Fantom G6.
Anyhow, I have some time to cancel the Fantom G6 if I come to my senses in the next week. They are on backorder because of this deal being so incredible.
The Korg Kronos accepts now external USB controllers - that's a nice upgrade. The Fantom G's sequencer and audio recording and interface is still better than the Kronos. Now Korg is promising an editor and VST plug-in - but it is not available right now. I have to hold to faith they will come thru with them. They are both a big deal, but the editor - that is crucial. I don't believe they didn't have that available when they released the keyboard. |
