Hi Guys,
I am trying to replicate a track first done on a DX7 in the early eighties! Now as I only played guitar at the time (and a little keys)
via midi, I am sure I only used presets of the Yamaha DX7.
I reckon I should be able to load the 32 factory presets from the DX7 into FM8. Any ideas?

Willy

Hi Willy,

I don't know for sure, but I doubt the preset format for the DX7 and FM8 are exactly the same. So you would need to recreate the DX7 presets inside of FM8.

You might be able to find a manufacturer who has already done something like this though. Here's some info on the NI site...

Hi Scot,

Hi Jack,

Yes you are right. However as the track was done in the early eighties on a DX7 then the chances are it would have been one of the 32 presets. Now, of the thousands of patches out there for a DX7 I don't want to rummage thru them all to find it!. But thanks sorted it now.

Hi Guys,

Have you heard of norCTracks? An east European 'maker' of Sample librarys for Kontakt. Now free Demo's are available from them of many vintage synths. And there DX7 had the patch I wanted! But beware?!?
As these are sampled from the original synths something I discovered is that, after being sampling at various intervals artifacts can be discerned in the playing of them in Kontakt. What? With hardware - software synths, any modulation frequencies etc would remain constant irrespective of note played.Of course with sampling across a range of notes these modulation frequencies are pitched up or down accordingly. Hence why I believe the quality is not there.
Back to my wants I simply looped a passage in Sonar and scrolled through the FM8 presets until I found what I was looking for.

Hope of interest and when I get a moment will sort out the DX7 to FM8 Sysex presets.

Willy

Yep, I've heard of norCTracks. But you're right about sampling... it doesn't provide exactly the same sound as the original synth. A synth sound usually evolves over time with different filters, envelopes, and modulations going on, whereas a sample of that sound would be static.

I would've thought that one of Cakewalk's synths had a pile of FM or DX7 type programs....

So, I looked FM synthesis up in Simon Cann's Cakewalk Synthesizers book. The CW synths that do FM are the Square, Pentagon, PSYN II and Z3ta+, so you might be able to find the sound you're looking for in one of those.

But Jack's suggestion is free and has 1024 programs, in addition to being able to save or load DX7 programs.
