Posted - 02/02/2012 : 9:11:11 PM Just got Sonar X1, and I'm going through Scott's book from page 1. I noticed that when talking about his own Creation Station DAW, he says he has two drives(as do I). However, when he gets to the section on organizing his files, he say that optimally I should have THREE drives! The third drive would be used "for streaming software synth sample libraries."
Fair enough, but not an option for me yet. So here's my question:
If I only have two drives, which drive should I use for soft synth streaming - my system drive, or the second drive I'll be using for project/audio/content files?
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions!

Thanks, Raijer! I really appreciate all your support.
By the way, you could also add an external drive to your system. If you have USB 3, that would be plenty fast for streaming. Internal drives are better, but external can work too.

Posted - 02/04/2012 : 02:25:56 AM Scott, Jim - thanks much for the response.
At this point I'm going to be relying more on midi/soft synth and live recording, but loops will certainly enter the picture. I'm just going to have to crack my comp open and see if I have room. Off the top of my head, it seemed there was only room for two drives there, but I could well be mistaken. I will double check, and if I got room for one more drive then I'll go for it. That said:
@ Jim, definitely would also like to hear more on your thoughts on SSDs.

Hey Jim,
Yeah, please share your SSD tips, if you have time...

Posted - 02/03/2012 : 1:30:24 PM Hi Raijer,
Thanks for purchasing my book! I hope you're enjoying it.
As Jim said, in your case, I would put the soft synths on your first (system OS drive). But if possible, just add a third drive. They're not very expensive.
However, if you only have the synths that came with SONAR, then you don't have to worry about anything right now because none of those synths stream audio. Instead, they load their sounds into the PC memory.
You only get the benefit from the third drive when you have soft synths that play large amounts of sample data and stream it from disc, such as Native Instruments KONTAKT, etc.

Posted - 02/03/2012 : 08:44:01 AM Personally, I'd recommend putting them on a second partition on the system drive. The second partition will do nothing for performance, but will simplify housekeeping/backup.
I typically find the best performance comes when I leave my audio drive unique, but then again, most of my configurations lend themselves to captured audio. If you lean more heavily into using samples, then you will probably want your sample drive to be a second partition on your audio drive. Again, the second partition is only to simplify housekeeping.
With modern systems a third drive is really a pretty inexpensive option, and definitely the best choice for both versatility and performance.
With the decreasing cost of SSDs, I really recommend considering a small SSD for the audio drive - onloading and offloading projects (you ARE using the per project option, right?) from another drive/partition/archive (whatever) as necessary. A system like that just plain screams. I actually use a pair in a striped raid... Muahahahaha...
